Trying something different ...

When I'm not being pretentious, self-absorbed and a feminist, I like to do a spot of cookery. Okay so technically no cooking was required in the following recipe, but I really felt I had to post this for several reasons - all of them feminist - that goes without saying.

The main reason is I hate salad. I also suspect that women who say they like it are liars. To me it was an 80's invention engineered to make women feel bad about themselves. Indeed it is a conspiracy used to fill them with false hope that they might end up with a body like Cindy Crawford's after a couple of tomatoes and lettuce leaf.

But this salad is different. Its incredibly moreish if you like sweet, salty, spicy, crunchy things. And let's face it who doesn't?

Also I've been reliably informed by my vegetarian flatmate, who when she's not giving out interesting bits of information, can be found scouring the shelves at Holland and Barratt, that carrots contain Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene. Good news for the eyes and the skin!

So here we go, this is my attempt at a Japanese Carrot Salad.

  1. That looks delicious! I shall make it. I do like salad but I have to have something with it like feta or tuna or something. I tend to juice vegetables to get my quota because I can't be bothered to chomp through it all! xx

  2. Well I usually have trouble getting my daily intake - I find raw vegetables a chore! And I agree I usually put feta in a salad. I made this one to go with other things (as a starter)- but it stands up on its own. I was apprehensive about serving it at first (as some people are scared of fish sauce) but it really works - if you get it to your taste. I hope you enjoy it! xxx

  3. yum. however, I must admit -and you know very well that i am not a cindy crawford diet-aholic- that i quite love a yummy salad. sometimes i crave them like crazy because you get just so much meat and bread. my favorites always include spinach or basil. my favorite of course is just basil tomatoes and mozarella with a bit of balsamic vinegar. ymmm food of the gods.-emma

  4. We'll in all seriousness I do enjoy salad too - its just that sometimes they can be full of grim leaves and what I call 'weeds' - and that's no fun. Just as long as they have cheese or fish or meat and a yummy dressing then I'll happily munch on one. The Japanese Salad doesn't have any of those but its the first one without that I've really enjoyed. Like you I really enjoy a good tomato and mozarella salad - with fresh basil and olive oil - delicious! When all the ingredients are top quality there's nothing better! xxx
